Google India are celebrating the 135th birthday of The Nightingale of India, Sarojini Naidu, with a Doodle on the Google India homepage.
Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13th 1879 at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Her family was from Bengal, and her mother was a poetess, which was probably the inspiration for Sarojini to take up poetry.
Sarojini took part in the Indian National Movement in 1905, during partition of Bengal in 1905. She met various personalities notably, Rabindranath Tagore, C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru.
She was also an activist and travelled across India delivering lectures about social welfare, women's empowerment and nationalism. She also helped to establish the Women's Indian Association (WIA) in 1917.
India’s National Women’s Day is celebrated in honour of the Independence activist, who later went on to become the First Woman to become Governor of an Indian State.
