Today some Twitter users were greeted with an email from the social network which said, “Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter. We’ve reset your password to prevent accessing your account.”
While the exact number of affected users is unknown, it is believed that less than 1 percent of users had their passwords reset. If you were one of the unlucky users affected by this, and panicked thinking that your account has been hacked, rest assured. Your account is probably safe.
However the social network confirmed that it was not attacked, and instead blamed it on a system error.
Here’s what a Twitter spokesperson told Recode,
“We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error. We apologize to the affected users for the inconvenience.”
Even though the accounts are safe, we recommend you to change weak passwords, and more importantly, use unique passwords for each online accounts.
