The Sony Xperia XA2 and the Xperia XA2 Ultra have officially been unveiled at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas. The surprising fact is that Sony is sticking to the old 16:9 ratio for the display, instead of moving to the taller 18:9 screens.
This makes the design a bit dull, but the side bezels are very minimal. The XA2 sports a 5.2 inch 1080 FullHD display, and the Xperia XA 2 Ultra features a 6.0 inch FullHD screen.
The devices are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for the XA2, while the XA2 Ultra has 4GB of RAM and will be available in 32GB/64GB variants. The XA2 uses a hybrid Dual SIM card tray for expandable memory, while the XA2 Ultra has a dedicated microSD card slot and support for Dual SIM cards.
The power button is now a circular one, aka OmniBalance (like the Xperia Z5). And as you may have noticed from the photos, the fingerprint sensor is no longer housed in the power button, and instead is now located on the back of the devices, which gives it a pretty generic look. The Sony Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra are the first phones from the company, with a fingerprint scanner, to be sold in the U.S. Prior to this, Sony sold phones which had the hardware sensor, but disabled the scanner in the software, for some unknown reason.
Both devices run on Android Oreo 8.0 out of the box, which means you get support for Treble. The XA2 is backed by a 3,300 mAh battery, while the Ultra packs a 3,580 mAh battery, with support for Qualcomm Quick Charging, Stamina Mode, Smart Stamina, Battery Care, Qnovo Adaptive Charging.
In the photography department, the devices share a 23 megapixels rear camera, with Sony’s Exmor RS sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, an 84° wide-angle lens, 4K video recording and 120fps slo-mo video recording. The selfie lens on the XA2 is an 8 megapixels fixed focus front camera with an f/2.4 aperture, 120° wide-angle lens while the XA2 Ultra has a dual lens set-up with the same 8MP front camera and a secondary 16MP camera with an 88° wide-angle lens with an f/2.0 aperture and also supports OIS (Optical image stabilization) and auto focus.
Connectivity options on the phones include 4g LTE Cat13/12, A-GPS, Glonass, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, FM Radio, NFC, a USB Type C port, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The Xperia XA2 will be available in 4 colours: Silver, Black, Blue and Pink. The Xperia XA2 Ultra will come in Silver, Black, Blue and Gold. Sony says the devices will begin shipping in February 2018.
