Microsoft says all Windows Phone 8 devices will receive 8.1 upgrade

Good news for Windows Phone users, as the Redmond based company have confirmed that all devices running on Windows Phone 8 will be receiving the Windows 8.1 upgrade.

Nokia Lumia 520

Microsoft are expected to release the Windows 8.1 upgrade this summer. This will depend on the user's wireless carrier, who has to distribute the 8.1 upgrade to their customer’s devices.

The announcement came at the CES 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada when the Windows Phone director of public relations at Microsoft,  Greg Sullivan said

"We will not have the same experience as we had when Windows Phone 7 was upgraded to Windows Phone 8,"

Users of earlier versions of Windows Phone, such as Windows Phone 7 were irked when the company refused to provide updates for their devices.

Perhaps they have reconsidered this decision after observing that owners of Android devices and Apple’s devices enjoy getting updates for existing Phones, thus preferring to buy them.

Microsoft has a policy of supporting updates for 36 months on a device. But while they declined to confirm their upgrade plans, Nokia have confirmed that the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 520 smartphones will be receiving the Window Phone 8.1 upgrade.

Microsoft are in the final stages of acquiring the Finnish phone giants, and are planning to use the Nokia brand name after the acquisition is complete.
