The much anticipated Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be released in April.

Microsoft Press Event at MWC

Joe Belfiore, the corporate vice president and manager for Microsoft’s  Windows Phone Program Management, confirmed this news at their press event at the Mobile World Congress 2014, in Barcelona.

They also shared details about the features in the update, these include the following:

  • Title bar at the top of Windows Store apps.
  • Power and search buttons on the Start Screen
  • Lower hardware requirements: 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage
  • Better support for Keyboard and Mouse

They  also confirmed the price cut for Windows 8 for devices retailing for $250 or less, which we wrote about last week.

The lowered hardware requirements will be welcomed by users who can expect a better performance, and also by manufacturers who can now pack the OS in cheaper devices.

The 8.1 update 1 is expected to be released sometime after the Microsoft Build Developer Conference, which is scheduled for April 2-4, 2014. But some leaked builds of the update have been making the rounds at file sharing websites and torrents.
