Star Wars: Episode VII cast announced: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, & Mark Hamill return to the franchise

The cast of the upcoming Star Wars movie was announced today.

Star Wars: Episode VII will see the return of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.

The above picture was released today, and includes the entire cast of the movie. It was taken at Pinewood Studios in the UK.

Here are the names of the people in the photo,

Writer/Director/Producer J.J Abrams (top center right), (clockwise from right) Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Producer Bryan Burk, Lucasfilm President and Producer Kathleen Kennedy, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Writer Lawrence Kasdan.

Quite a few unknown names there. In case you were unable to identify the new names in the franchise, they are: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.

And a quick refresher of the roles played by the classic cast:

  • Mark Hamill - Luke Skywalker
  • Harrison Ford - Han Solo
  • Carrie Fisher - Princess Leia Organa
  • Anthony Daniels - C-3PO
  • Kenny Baker - R2-D2
  • Peter Mayhew – Chewbacca

This is the first movie in the franchise since Disney took over, and also the first not to feature the work of George Lucas.

The movie is directed by J.J Abrams who is known for Star Trek (2009 )and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Here is what he had to say about the movie,

"We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is set to hit theatres Worldwide on December 18, 2015.

I can’t wait for it, although I am already missing one name from the original Trilogy, James Earl Jones, aka the voice of Darth Vader.
