Yahoo enables HTTPS by default for Yahoo Mail

Following the footsteps of Gmail, Facebook and Twitter, Yahoo Mail have recently switched to HTTPS encryption for all users. To ensure that users data and privacy is secured, HTTPS encryption is now enabled by default and automatically encrypts all kind of connections between users and Yahoo Mail.

This recent change was announced by Jeff Bonforte, SVP of Communication Products, Yahoo on company’s blog. It states that:

Anytime you use Yahoo Mail - whether it’s on the web, mobile web, mobile apps, or via IMAP, POP or SMTP- it is 100% encrypted by default and protected with 2,048 bit certificates. This encryption extends to your emails, attachments, contacts, as well as Calendar and Messenger in Mail.

This move seems to be a part of Yahoo’s effort to provide an enhanced security cover to its users, given the recent concerns on surveillance activities being carried out by various governments.

Amazingly, the default HTTPS comes exactly one year after Yahoo first rolled out their SSL encryption feature for Yahoo Mail. A coincidence- may be.
