WhatsApp has introduced a new update that allows users to add and manage their contacts directly through the app. This update simplifies the process and provides a new level of privacy for users, allowing contacts to be stored within WhatsApp rather than relying on the phone’s contact list. Previously, WhatsApp contacts had to be added manually by entering phone numbers or scanning a QR code, and these contacts were stored on the device itself. If the device was lost, users would lose access to their WhatsApp contacts.

Now, users can add and manage contacts directly from WhatsApp Web and the Windows app, making the process more flexible. Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced the option to save contacts exclusively within the app, which can be particularly useful for those who share their phone with others or for users who want to keep their personal and business contacts separate. This feature will benefit those who manage more than one WhatsApp account on the same device, providing a more organized and private way to handle contacts.

In a blog post on October 22, WhatsApp mentioned that contacts saved through the app can be restored even if the user loses their phone or switches to a new device. This ensures that users won’t lose their contacts due to a lost or damaged device, making the app more reliable and user-friendly.

One of the most exciting aspects of this update is the possibility of managing contacts by usernames in the future. WhatsApp’s team explained that this would provide users with an additional layer of privacy. By using usernames, people won’t need to share their phone numbers when messaging new contacts. While this feature isn’t available yet, WhatsApp stated that it is working towards making this a reality.

To ensure the security of the new contact management system, WhatsApp has created an encrypted storage system called ‘Identity Proof Linked Storage’ (IPLS). This system encrypts contact names within the app, ensuring that only the user has access to their contacts. WhatsApp has taken extra measures to protect this system by partnering with Cloudflare, an independent third-party company, to audit the storage system and guarantee its safety.

In summary, this new update gives WhatsApp users more flexibility and control over their contacts while ensuring a high level of privacy and security. Whether users want to keep their personal and business contacts separate or prepare for future updates like usernames, WhatsApp is providing tools that make contact management easier and safer.
