OnePlus has officially confirmed in a chat, that it has discontinued the OnePlus 3T 128GB. But no, it does not seem because the company is preparing for an immediate launch of the OnePlus 5.
The reason given out to the person who made an inquiry after seeing the OnePlus 3T marked as discontinued on its website, was as follows.
Since we are a small company we need to focus on our efforts on one flagship device, thus we will no longer be selling the OnePlus 3T Gunmetal 128GB. However, please rest assured, we will continue to provide support for the OnePlus 3T Gunmetal 128GB.
Interestingly a comment on Tweakers hints at a possible reason why the OnePlus 3T 128GB has been discontinued. It appears to be their partnership with Samsung, which is likely the cause. The South Korean electronics giant was the supplier of the internal storage used on the OnePlus3T 128GB. Specifically, the memory chip was a UFS 2.0 storage, which has now reached End of Life production as mentioned at Samsung’s website.
But this could potentially accelerate the OnePlus 5 launch, if the company wants to cater to potential buyers looking for a device with large storage. With the Galaxy S8, LG G6 and OnePlus’ rival on its home soil , Xiaomi, having the Mi 6 available for purchase already, OnePlus will very much be looking forward to launching the OnePlus 5 in June or July/
