Though the developer preview update will not be available via your Phone’s built in updater, you can still install the update in a few simple steps.

Disclaimer: Please be aware that installing the Developer Preview will void your warranty. Also note that, you cannot roll back to a previous version of the OS. Proceed at your own risk.

How to download and install Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview:

1. First, go to the Windows Phone App Studio website and sign in using your existing Microsoft account.

2. Download the Preview for Developers app on to your phone, and sign in using the same Microsoft ID.

3. Go to your Phone’s settings and select “Phone Update”. It should now detect the Windows 8.1 preview update and install it on your device.

Sadly, Microsoft’s Virtual Assistant, Cortana (of Halo fame), is only available in the United States. Initially, Microsoft plan to add Cortana support for UK and China. However, they are preparing to make it available for more Countries in 2015. Another feature missing in the preview build of Windows Phone 8.1, is the custom lock screen support, that was previewed during the BUILD conference.
