Google to shut down Orkut in September #RIPOrkut

Google has announced that they will be bringing down the curtains on the social network, Orkut.

Orkut Logo

Orkut began as a fledgling social network in 2004, was probably the most popular one in India and Brazil in the past decade, until Facebook and Twitter took over the social networking crowns a few years ago.

Ten years later, there are still some users who are active on the legendary network, and who will probably be in a grumpy mood, when they are greeted by the page which says, Orkut is shutting down.

The service will be shut down on 30th September, 2014. But until then, you can still login, play games, & use your account as normal. You can export your photo albums to Google+.

Once the service is shutdown on September 30, 2014, you will not be able to login to Orkut, or do any of the activities mentioned above . But you will have until September 2016, to save your Orkut profile, scraps, testimonials, & community posts to your computer using Google Takeout. The one good piece of news is that, all Communities will be archived, and can be viewed by anyone even after the service is shut down. I suppose it will be sort of a museum for itself. By the way, if you haven’t tried Orkut yet, it is too late, as you can no longer create an account there.

You can visit the help center article by Google to export your data, delete your posts, and more.

To be frank, we all knew this was going to happen someday. Google maybe well known for it’s email and search engine, but it has garnered for it’s infamous tendency to send it’s older services to the Google Graveyard. And with the rise of Google+, it was virtually impossible to resurrect Orkut.

Were you a member of any Orkut community? Are you upset by Google’s decision to kill the social network? Drop a comment and share your thoughts with us.
