Google Password Manager Outage Affects Millions of Users

However, from July 24, millions of users were unable to find or save their passwords stored in the manager for nearly 18 hours.

Google's incident report revealed that the problem stemmed from a change in product behavior that was implemented without the proper safeguards. This issue specifically affected the M127 version of Chrome on Windows. When the configuration change was rolled out, 25% of Chrome’s 3 billion users, approximately 750 million people, encountered the new settings. Out of these, about 2% experienced the password manager issue, equating to roughly 15 million users who lost access to their passwords.

During the incident, Google provided a temporary workaround for affected users. This involved launching Chrome with a command line flag: --enable-features=SkipUndecryptablePasswords. While this offered a temporary fix, it wasn't a perfect solution for everyone.

Fortunately, a permanent fix was eventually rolled out. Google advised users to simply restart their browser, which resolved the issue. By July 27 at 09:27 AM PT, Google confirmed that the problem had been mitigated for all affected users. In their statement, Google apologized for any inconvenience the service disruption caused and encouraged Chrome users who experienced issues not covered in the incident report to contact Google Workspace Support.
