Free Basics service suspended in Egypt

Free basics suspended

Earlier we covered a post about ‘Save Free Basics’ - Facebook is rolling out a campaign in India- Things to Know. In which Facebook tried to convince TRAI to support the Free Basics , which is another name of Inernet.org.

What is Free Basics ?

Free Basics is a service by Facebook which allow users to access Facebook and some other websites for FREE. That means you will not have to pay data charges to your service providers when you access these sites.

Now there are more news coming against the Free Basics service. Egypt suspended the Free Basics service. Etisalat (Egyptian mobile service provider) started the Free Basics two months ago.

Facebook said they hope to "resolve this situation soon"  and  they are disappointed that Free Basics will no longer be available in Egypt. Facebook claims more than 1 million people who were previously unconnected had been using the Internet because of these efforts.

Earlier in December TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) asked the service providers to stop the Free Basics services.

Facebook is spending money to protect and spread the news about Free Basics by news papers and billboard advertisements in India and Egypt.
