Black Myth: Wukong Breaks Records on Steam with Over 2 Million Concurrent Players

Black Myth: Wukong has quickly become the most popular game on Steam, reaching an astounding peak of 2.15 million concurrent players. This impressive figure, according to SteamDB, is the second-highest all-time concurrent user count on Steam, surpassing even legendary titles like Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2.

Reaching 2,151,942 concurrent players, Black Myth: Wukong has set a new record for single-player games on Steam. To put this into perspective, the game managed to hit this milestone at around 9:15 a.m. EDT, and its player count seems likely to grow even further throughout the day.

The current record for the most concurrent users on Steam is held by PUBG: Battlegrounds, which hit its peak in January 2018 shortly after its launch. Other popular titles like Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, which have maintained large player bases for years, have never crossed the 2 million concurrent player mark. Counter-Strike 2 saw its highest concurrent player count in May 2023, during its “Limited Test” phase, with 1,818,773 players, while Dota 2 reached its peak of 1,295,114 players in March 2016.

Another player data source, SteamCharts, has yet to update its records to reflect Black Myth: Wukong’s impressive numbers.

How Does Black Myth: Wukong Compare to Other Single-Player Games?

Black Myth: Wukong’s success is even more remarkable when compared to other highly anticipated single-player games released in recent years. For example, Cyberpunk 2077, which was one of the most talked-about games of 2020, peaked at 1,054,388 concurrent players on its launch day. Similarly, Elden Ring, released in February 2022, saw a peak of 953,426 players on its first day. Hogwarts Legacy, launched in February 2023, reached an all-time high of 879,308 players at launch.

In contrast, Black Myth: Wukong’s concurrent player count dwarfs these numbers, making it the most successful single-player game on Steam in recent memory. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that Black Myth: Wukong is a single-player game with no live service component, which often helps sustain player engagement over time.

What’s Next for Black Myth: Wukong?

Game Science, the developer behind Black Myth: Wukong, has hinted at potential expansions if the game continues to sell well, but no official roadmap has been confirmed yet. This uncertainty leaves players wondering what might come next for this highly successful title.

For comparison, Elden Ring saw a significant boost in its concurrent player count with the release of its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in June 2023, which pushed its numbers to 781,261 that week. However, even with this boost, Elden Ring still didn’t break the 1 million concurrent player mark.

Black Myth: Wukong’s record-breaking success is a testament to the game’s appeal and the anticipation surrounding its release. Whether or not it continues to break records in the coming days, it has already secured its place as one of the most significant single-player game launches in Steam history.
